Atelier Versace is BACK!

Atelier Versace is returning to the Paris haute couture runway in January 2027 under Pieter Mulier, the clearest signal yet of the house’s post-Prada direction.

On October 28, Versace confirmed that Mulier, who joined as chief creative officer on July 1 after leaving Alaïa, will present his first Atelier Versace collection during Paris Couture Week (January 25–28). It will be the line’s first dedicated runway show in roughly a decade; the last was in July 2016 under Donatella Versace. In the intervening years Atelier continued through private orders and red-carpet pieces. A preview already appeared when Nicole Kidman wore an asymmetric black hand-intarsia lace gown (with matching choker) at the Practical Magic 2 premiere in late August.

The timing aligns with a broader shift visible on recent runways. After seasons of quiet luxury, Autumn/Winter 2026 embraced maximalism: extravagant embellishment (feathers, sequins, beadwork, fringe), clashing prints, sculptural silhouettes, and statement accessories. Heuritech’s analysis of more than 10,000 looks pointed to more expressive textures, bold shapes, and confident color. Examples ranged from Maison Margiela’s head-to-toe gold ensembles and Zuhair Murad’s crimson feathers to Erdem’s heavily embroidered patchwork gowns, Valentino’s floral-appliqué jackets with sequins, and Givenchy’s cascading multicolored fringe. Illusion techniques also thrived—trompe-l’œil, inside-out construction, built-in layering, and garments that appear to disappear—making familiar clothes feel slightly off.

Business reality remains more cautious. Kering’s third-quarter results (released earlier in the week) showed group sales essentially flat and Gucci down 6% on a comparable basis, driven mainly by weaker store traffic, especially in China. The group has accelerated store closures and dropped its 2026 return-to-growth target; shares fell roughly 10%. Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta provided some offset, but Gucci’s recovery remains the priority under CEO Luca de Meo.

Elsewhere on the calendar, Dior has already locked in its next major destination show: Jonathan Anderson will present Cruise 2028 in Shanghai on May 14, 2027, the house’s first major runway there since John Galliano’s 2010 edition and a nod to a “Shanghai” look in Christian Dior’s 1948 collection. Recent weeks also brought the 10th-anniversary Miami Fashion Week (October 13–18), São Paulo Fashion Week (fluid volumes, unfinished details, and Brazilian craft), and Dubai Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2027.

In short, the industry is staging a return to drama and couture spectacle while still wrestling with softer demand and the slow work of brand turnarounds. Mulier’s January Atelier show will be one of the first clear tests of whether Versace’s new ownership and creative leadership can translate boldness into sustained momentum.
