Organic Fashion?

In July 2025, Dutch couture designer Iris van Herpen unveiled a groundbreaking bridal gown as part of her Sympoiesis collection at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week.

The gown was created in collaboration with Japanese biotech company Spiber. What makes it revolutionary is the fabric: Brewed Protein™ — a man-made protein fiber grown through microbial fermentation, similar to the process used to make yogurt or cheese.

Instead of traditional silk or synthetic polyester, Spiber engineers DNA in a lab to create a protein-based material inspired by spider silk. The process uses fermented sugarcane and agricultural waste, making it far more sustainable. The resulting fiber is incredibly strong, lightweight, biodegradable, and recyclable — it can literally be broken down and turned into nutrients to grow new material.

The gown itself beautifully balances structure with fluidity. It represents the perfect marriage of cutting-edge science and artistic elegance — proving that the most forward-thinking fashion can also honor the planet.

This is exactly the kind of story Mark 541 was created to highlight: fashion that doesn’t just look beautiful, but carries deeper meaning through innovation, sustainability, and thoughtful design.
